Guest Speaker Merissa Gamba, PE SE Uzun + Case Presentation Title CAMPUS 244 – Case Study Presentation Synopsis This presentation begins with a basic introduction into the Campus 244 project. A renovation and vertical expansion to an existing 1970s office building. The presentation will then focus on the retrofitting aspects of the project. Column and beam strengthening along with the introduction of a new lateral load resisting system. It will then discuss the structural steel transfer floor along with the mass timber Level 5 and Roof. Program will wrap up with discussion of some challenges faced and lessons learned. Speaker Bio Merissa has over 20 years of experience in a wide variety of projects. She joined Uzun + Case in 1999 and was named a Principal in 2018. Her project experience includes higher education, institutional, public use, commercial, and mixed-use developments. She likes the challenge of unusual and complicated projects, such as the Georgia and Mississippi aquariums, Kennesaw State Recreation Center and the Georgia Tech Campus Center. She is known for her collaborative efforts and understands the importance of good communication and teamwork.

BiographyMr. Powell is an Atlanta native that grew up in Dunwoody when it still had a few dirt roads.  He attended Dunwoody High School, GA Tech, and Auburn and upon graduation went straight into the concrete pipe and precast industry.  The recession of 2007 led him into concrete repair, running a crew doing epoxy and polyurethane injection. In 2012 Mr. Powell was asked to help start Alchemy Polymers (now Alchatek).  Currently he is the Director of Business Development

In this presentation we will analyze how watertight, energy efficient, fire-rated expansion joints are the consequence of a process in which we: Design, Detail, Specify, Bid, Erect, Manufacture, and Install in 3-D. Speaker Bio’s ICRI member Robert M. Weilacher is a principal with Uzun+Case in Atlanta, Georgia.  He is a member of ACI Committee 130, Sustainability of Concrete.  He is a past president of the Georgia Chapter – ACI and former president of the Structural Engineers Association of Georgia.  He received his BS and MS in Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.  ICRI Member George H. Harrison currently is Principal and Group Manager of Non-Destructive Testing in the Norcross, Georgia office of UES. He currently is a voting member of both ACI Committee 302 Guide to Concrete Floor and Slab Construction and ACI Committee 332 Code Requirements for Residential Concrete. He also is past president of the Georgia Chapter ACI (2012). Graduate of Southampton College – LIU, B.S. Geology. Presentation Synopsis On February 27, 2020, the project at Eastern Wharf in Savannah suffered a fire, which quickly engulfed the several floors of wood-framed residences that were being constructed over two levels of cast-in-place concrete parking deck structure.  This presentation covers the procedure to investigate damage to the concrete structure and then repair it so the contractor could rebuild the wood framed residences on top.

Speaker Bio: Trey Thomas, PE Trey Thomas PE is a graduate of Southern Polytechnic State University and is a registered structural engineer in multiple states. Mr. Thomas has over 18 years’ experience as a structural engineer in both design and construction and has specialized in the parking structure restoration field for the last 15 years. Uniquely he has received specialized training and certification in a diverse range of technical areas that are unique to the structural profession including: FAA Certified Drone Pilot-In-Command with Daylight Waiver, FAA Visual Observer, Level 1 Thermographer, OSHA Competent Boom Lift Operator, and SPRAT Level 2 (Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians) Industrial Rope Access Technician building climber, OSHA 30 Hour Safety Certified, and an Asbestos, Lead, and Mold Certified Sampler.
