What is wrong with my Precast Concrete Parking Garage?
Analysis of Fatigue Failure of Precast Double-Tee Connections due to High Cycle Vehicular Loading

Welded tee-to-tee flange connections of precast concrete parking garages are poorly configured to withstand high-cycle vehicular loading. Fatigue failure of these connections is common but rarely recognized. This presentation explains how to identify fatigue failures and examines Building Code requirements and industry standards as they apply to high-cycle fatigue performance of commonly used details. Parameters discussed include connection configuration, cycle analysis, weld type, effective weld size, Allowable Stress Range, Stress Category, crack initiation point, and allowable design capacity. An example of the most commonly used connection detail, consisting of fillet welds on a flat erection bar, is analyzed to demonstrate application and implications of AWS and AISC Code provisions. Scanning electron micrograph images of fractured welds are analyzed to demonstrated fatigue failure mechanism. Consequential effects of fatigue failure and considerations for optimized fatigue-resistant connection design are also discussed.

Lawrence E. Keenan, AIA PE is Vice President and Director of Engineering with Hoffmann Architects Inc. (, an architecture and engineering firm specializing in the rehabilitation of building exteriors. Both a licensed structural engineer and a registered architect, Mr. Keenan has been solving design problems in garages, facades, and plazas with Hoffmann Architects for 20 years. His solutions have resolved design flaws, material failures, fabrication issues, and the effects of time and weather at structures ranging from tall office towers to below grade parking garages. He provides forensic analysis and litigation support, including investigative reporting and expert testimony. Pioneering in his work, Mr. Keenan holds two patents for innovative seismic connection designs that prevent and remediate structural failures at precast parking garage decks. He is also president of the Connecticut Chapter of the International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI)
