Post-Earthquake Assessment and Repair of the Washington Monument and Washington National Cathedral

jan2016The ICRI Georgia Chapter hosted its 2016 kickoff meeting on January 21. The lunch meeting was held at Maggiano’s in the Perimeter/ Dunwoody area of Atlanta and was well attended by 35 members and guests.

Bryan Heery, ICRI Georgia chapter president, opened the meeting by introducing the 2016 officers and board members. Mr. Heery also recognized and introduced several past presidents which were in attendance. After formal introductions, Bryan recognized Everclear Enterprises as the January meeting sponsor and gave a brief overview of their company and work in the market.

Ralf Leistikow of Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates (WJE) presented a post-earthquake assessment and repair of the Washington Monument and Washington National Cathedral. These two iconic structures suffered significant damage from the 5.8 magnitude earthquake which shook the Washington area in August of 2011. WJE was retained by the National Park Service to complete a close-up inspection of both of these iconic structures and to develop a scope of remedial work. Mr. Leistikow’s presentation included photos and a very informative video of the observed damage and the inspections completed following the earthquake.

Since joining WJE 25 years ago, Mr. Ralf Leistikow has been involved in numerous structural investigations, evaluations, and repair designs on low- and high-rise buildings, as well as parking, commercial, and underground structures. It should also be noted that Mr. Leistikow is a past president of the ICRI’s Georgia Chapter and is a voting member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI).

After the presentation, Bryan Heery encouraged all attendees to really push the upcoming lunch meeting in February and formally closed the meeting.
